Privacy Policy

Effective date: March 12, 2026

Compass ("we," "us," "our") operates the Compass iOS application and the website at usecompass.app (together, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.

We built Compass for founders who write down their thinking. Your notes are personal. We treat them that way.

1. What We Collect

Information you give us

  • Account information: your email address and any profile details you provide when signing up.
  • Notes and journal entries: text content you create inside Compass, including voice recordings and their transcriptions.
  • Waitlist signup: your email address when you join the waitlist on our landing page.
  • Support communications: messages you send us via email or in-app feedback.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage analytics: we use PostHog to collect anonymized usage data (pages viewed, features used, session duration). PostHog does not collect your note content.
  • Device information: device type, operating system version, app version, and crash logs.
  • Subscription data: RevenueCat processes your subscription status. We receive subscription tier and status but never your payment card details (Apple handles that).

2. How We Use Your Data

  • To provide the Service: storing your notes, syncing across devices, processing voice recordings into text.
  • AI processing: Compass uses AI to categorize your notes, detect patterns, and surface connections. This processing happens to make your experience better. Your data is never used to train AI models. We don't sell it, license it, or feed it into any training pipeline.
  • To communicate with you: transactional emails (account confirmations, subscription receipts) sent via Resend, and product updates if you've opted in.
  • To improve Compass: understanding aggregate usage patterns helps us build better features. We analyze anonymized, aggregated data for this purpose.

3. Third-Party Services

We share data with these services only as needed to operate Compass:

  • Apple / App Store: handles payment processing for subscriptions. We never see your credit card number.
  • RevenueCat: manages subscription status and entitlements. Their privacy policy.
  • PostHog: product analytics (anonymized usage data). Their privacy policy.
  • Resend: transactional and marketing emails. Their privacy policy.

We don't sell your personal information to anyone. We don't share your note content with any third party.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on secure cloud infrastructure with encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest. We use industry-standard security practices including access controls, monitoring, and regular security reviews.

No system is 100% secure. We can't guarantee absolute security, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information and will notify you promptly if a breach affects your data.

5. Your Rights

You can:

  • Access your data: export your notes at any time from within the app.
  • Delete your data: delete individual notes in the app, or request full account deletion by emailing [email protected]. We'll process deletion requests within 30 days.
  • Opt out of marketing emails: click "unsubscribe" in any marketing email. Transactional emails (password resets, receipts) will still be sent.
  • Opt out of analytics: contact us at [email protected] to opt out of PostHog tracking.

6. Cookies and Analytics

Our website uses PostHog for analytics. PostHog may set cookies to understand how visitors use usecompass.app. These are functional analytics cookies, not advertising trackers. We don't run third-party ad trackers on our site.

7. Data Retention

We keep your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we'll remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we're legally required to retain it (for example, billing records).

8. Children's Privacy

Compass is not intended for anyone under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, contact us at [email protected] and we'll delete it.

9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you're a California resident, you have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose about you.
  • Request deletion of your personal information.
  • Opt out of the sale of personal information. (We don't sell your data, so there's nothing to opt out of.)
  • Not be discriminated against for exercising your privacy rights.

To exercise these rights, email [email protected]. We'll respond within 45 days.

10. European Privacy Rights (GDPR)

If you're in the European Economic Area (EEA) or UK, you have additional rights:

  • Legal basis: we process your data based on contract performance (providing the Service), legitimate interest (improving Compass), and consent (marketing emails).
  • Data portability: you can export your notes in a standard format.
  • Right to object: you can object to processing based on legitimate interest.
  • Right to erasure: request deletion of your data at any time.
  • Supervisory authority: you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Data may be transferred to the United States for processing. We use standard contractual clauses and appropriate safeguards to protect your information during transfer.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll notify you via email or an in-app notice. Continued use of Compass after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
