
A small security lab called AISLE spent last week quietly making every "which LLM should I use" argument on Twitter look silly.

On April 7, Anthropic [announced Mythos](https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-opus-4-7), a specialized AI model wrapped in a consortium called Project Glasswing. AWS, Apple, Google, JPMorgan, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Palo Alto Networks. The pitch: here's the model that autonomously finds thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities in software humans have been staring at for decades.

A 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD. A 16-year-old bug in FFmpeg. Multi-stage privilege escalation chains in the Linux kernel. [Anthropic committed up to $100M](https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-opus-4-7) in usage credits to the effort.

Nine days later, AISLE published [a response](https://aisle.com/blog/ai-cybersecurity-after-mythos-the-jagged-frontier) that sat at the top of Hacker News with 1,275 points. They took the specific vulnerabilities Mythos showcased, isolated the code, and ran it through small open-weights models.

Eight of those eight models detected Mythos's flagship FreeBSD exploit. One of them had 3.6 billion active parameters and cost $0.11 per million tokens. On a basic security reasoning task, the tiny open models beat most frontier models from every major lab.

AISLE's post has one sentence that matters for every founder building anything with AI right now:

**"The moat is the system into which deep security expertise is built, not the model itself."**

Sit with it for a second.

## Why this matters outside of security

Founders are in a worse spot than AISLE, and most of them don't realize it.

AISLE wins because they spent a year building the scaffolding around the model. A discovery pipeline, a validation loop, a patch generator, a relationship with maintainers that gets patches accepted. (They've shipped 180+ externally validated CVEs, including 15 in OpenSSL and 5 in curl.)

The model they use is interchangeable. They swap Claude, GPT, Qwen, Llama based on the task. What stays constant is the system.

Now look at how most founders use AI. You open [Claude](https://usecompass.app/vs/claude) or ChatGPT, type a question into a blank input, and hope it knows enough about your life to give you an answer that isn't generic. The context you feed it is whatever you can type in 90 seconds before the next meeting.

The model has no idea what you were worried about last Tuesday, who your top 3 customers are, what you decided about pricing two months ago, or why you hired a designer before an engineer.

You're asking a $25-per-million-token frontier model to do strategic thinking on zero scaffolding. No wonder the output sounds like a McKinsey intern wrote it.

## What every major lab shipped this week (by accident)

Go look at what Anthropic, OpenAI, and Alibaba released in the past 7 days. The pattern is obvious once you see it.

- **[Claude Code Routines](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/routines):** scheduled agents that run on triggers, with context injected from saved configs and connectors.
- **[OpenAI Agents SDK 2.0](https://openai.com/index/the-next-evolution-of-the-agents-sdk/):** native filesystem, sandboxed shell, MCP connectors, Skills as a packaging unit, `AGENTS.md` as standard. Codex is at 3M weekly active users. [Enterprise revenue is already 40%+](https://openai.com/index/next-phase-of-enterprise-ai/) of OpenAI's total and tracking for parity with consumer by the end of 2026.
- **[Qwen 3.6-35B-A3B](https://qwen.ai/blog?id=qwen3.6-35b-a3b):** open-weights agentic coder, 3B active parameters, runs on a laptop.

Every one of those releases ships scaffolding around the model. Memory, tools, context, triggers, permissions, audit trails. The model layer is roughly stable. The plumbing is where every major lab is racing.

The bottleneck moved. If you're still treating "which LLM" as the interesting question, you're arguing about the wrong thing.

## What founders have that's actually scarce

Here's the part that stings.

The scarce input for a founder's AI is you. Your situation, your decisions, your customer calls, your unresolved 2am worries, your pattern of mistakes, your weekly context.

A frontier model in 2026 is basically a commodity. You can rent one for a few dollars. You can download one for free. Six weeks from now a better one will ship on whatever benchmark you care about. The model is the cheapest part of the stack.

What's expensive is the structured record of your own thinking. There's exactly one of those per founder, and no external tool will build it for you.

This is the thing founders miss when they reach for a chat window on a blank page. They're treating the chat as the whole tool. The chat window is the cheapest layer in the stack. The expensive layer is the memory sitting behind it.

Without that, you're running your strategic thinking on whatever was in your head for the last 30 seconds.

If the moat is the system, the next question is obvious. What's in it?

Most founders hate this framing because it moves the work.

When the story was "pick the best model," the work was shopping. Read a benchmark, subscribe to the top one, feel like you made a strategic decision. Done in 10 minutes.

When the story is "build the system around the model," the work is building. Capture habits. Weekly rhythms. Structured notes. A log of your decisions. A query layer that works across tools. That takes weeks of setup and years of practice. No signup flow will do it for you.

The moat is the system, not the model: what AI cybersecurity just taught every founder


You had a product insight on a walk last Thursday. By the time you sat down to type it out, half of it was gone.

It's a bandwidth problem. The average person types around 40 words per minute. They speak at 150. That's a 4x gap between the speed of your thinking and the speed of your fingers.

For founders, that gap is expensive. Your best ideas don't show up at a desk with a keyboard in front of you. They hit during commutes, between meetings, in the shower, on a run. And if capturing them requires sitting down and typing, most of them evaporate.

## The Math Is Brutal

Take a founder who spends 2 hours a day writing: emails, notes, Slack messages, docs, journal entries, investor updates.

The result: you talk naturally, and the output looks like you sat down and wrote it.

Here's the part that surprised me. Voice is a different kind of thinking entirely.

Founders write things they wouldn't say out loud.

Doubts about cofounders. Numbers that scare them. Sketches of decisions still 6 months from happening. The whole point of Compass is that you can dump it all in and trust the system to think with you. That trust has a precondition: when you write something private, it actually stays private.

So the question worth asking is the ugly one. If a Compass database leaks tomorrow, what happens to your notes?

The answer should be: nothing useful for the attacker. Here's how we got there.

## The Threat We're Defending Against

Most data breaches look like a misconfigured backup. A leaked S3 bucket. A junior engineer with too many permissions. A SQL injection that dumps a table to a forum somewhere.

The category we worry about most is **database exfiltration**. Someone gets a copy of the rows. We want those rows to be cryptographic noise. Bytes that look indistinguishable from random.

## Two Locks, One Vault

The pattern we use is called **envelope encryption**. It's how AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure all handle customer data at rest. The shape is:

1. **Every user has a personal key** (called a Data Encryption Key, or DEK). When you save a note, it gets encrypted with your key using [AES-256-GCM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galois/Counter_Mode), the same algorithm Signal, banks, and the US government use for classified data up to TOP SECRET.

2. **Your personal key is itself locked** with a master key (called a Key Encryption Key, or KEK). The encrypted version of your key sits in our database next to the notes. Useless without the master.

3. **The master key lives in a separate vault**, not in the database. We use Cloudflare's secrets infrastructure for this. Different system, different access controls, different audit logs, different blast radius.

To read one of your notes, the system needs three things at the same time: the encrypted note, the encrypted personal key, and the master key from the vault.

Steal one, you have nothing. Steal two, you still have nothing. You'd need all three at once, from three independently locked-down systems.

## Why Per-User Keys Matter

A lot of products encrypt with a single master key for everyone. It's faster, it's simpler, and a single key compromise leaks the entire dataset. We've seen this go wrong publicly more than once.

Per-user keys mean an attack on one founder is contained. Something going wrong with one user's key wouldn't cascade to anyone else. It also means key rotation can happen surgically instead of as a 6-month migration project.

This is the same model 1Password uses for its server-side records, and it's part of why their breach disclosures are so consistently boring.

## The Database Trigger That Refuses Plaintext

Here's the part most security write-ups skip.

You can have the world's best encryption library, but encryption only works if every code path actually uses it. One forgotten `INSERT` from a debug script, one developer testing a fix at 2 AM, one migration that copies a column wrong, and you've got plaintext sitting in a row that everyone forgot about.

So we pushed the rule into the database itself. There's a trigger that fires before any insert or update on the notes table. If the row tries to write plaintext content, the database throws an error and refuses the write. If the encryption flag is missing or wrong, same outcome.

The application can't bypass it. A migration can't bypass it. A confused engineer running an ad-hoc query at midnight can't bypass it.

It's the kind of belt-and-suspenders move you don't appreciate until the day it saves you.

## Why the IV (and the Auth Tag) Matter

A few smaller details that quietly do a lot of work:

**Random IV per encryption.** Every time we encrypt a note, we generate a fresh random Initialization Vector. This means encrypting the word "test" twice produces two completely different ciphertexts. Without it, attackers could spot duplicates across the dataset and infer patterns. AES-GCM specifically requires this, and reusing an IV with the same key catastrophically breaks the algorithm. We don't.

**GCM authentication tag.** GCM (the mode we use) encrypts and signs in one step. Every encrypted blob carries a tamper-detection tag. Flip a single bit in the database, and decryption fails loudly instead of returning garbage. This protects against an attacker who can write to the database but not read it (rarer, but it happens).

## How This Stacks Up

Here's the comparison against what's industry standard for cloud SaaS in 2026:

The cryptographic recipe matches what you'd get from AWS S3 server-side encryption, Google Drive, or Dropbox. The trigger-level enforcement is something we haven't seen in any consumer note app we've audited.

## What This Is Not

We owe you the honest version.

Server-side encryption protects your notes from one specific category of attack: people who get the data but not the master key. It doesn't make Compass end-to-end encrypted (E2EE).

E2EE means the key lives only on your device, derived from your password, and the server literally can't decrypt your data, ever. [Signal](https://signal.org) does this. [ProtonMail](https://proton.me/mail) does this. [Standard Notes](https://standardnotes.com) does this. They're real privacy products and we respect them.

We chose server-side encryption over E2EE for one reason: inference. Compass needs to read your notes to find patterns across them, generate weekly reflections, and surface insights you'd miss on your own. If the server can't read the text, none of that works.

That's the tradeoff we made, and we want to be transparent about it. You're trusting Cloudflare not to combine three independently locked-down systems against you. The same trust you extend to every cloud SaaS you use today, including the one your company runs on.

## How We Compare to Other Note Apps

A quick survey of where the popular options sit:

- **Apple Notes:** Default is iCloud-synced, server-side decryptable. End-to-end only if you turn on Advanced Data Protection (most people don't). Strong, but opt-in.
- **Notion:** Server-side encryption at rest. No per-user keys publicly disclosed. Their team can read your pages.
- **Google Keep:** Server-side encryption with Google's standard at-rest stack. Google can read your notes.
- **Evernote:** Server-side encryption at rest. They added an optional in-note "encrypted text" feature but the surrounding metadata sits in plaintext.
- **Day One:** End-to-end encrypted with a key derived from your master password. Strong, but no AI features that touch note content.
- **Standard Notes:** End-to-end encrypted by default. Same tradeoff as Day One: limited AI on note content.
- **Compass:** Envelope encryption with per-user keys, master key in a separate vault, plaintext rejected at the database layer. Server can decrypt to power insight generation.

We sit in the middle of the spectrum on purpose. Strong server-side protection, with the openness that lets the product be useful.

## The Tradeoff We Actually Made

Pure end-to-end encryption gives you a dumb text editor, safe because nothing can touch your notes, including the thing you bought to help you think. Pure cloud AI gives you a brilliant assistant that quietly turns your private thoughts into someone else's training data. Neither one is what a founder actually needs, so we picked the harder path: encrypt the things that should never leave your control, run inference on the things that need to compound into something useful. The wall sits in the right place, between the database and the world, not between you and your own ideas.

This is the design, on purpose. The notes you write at 2 AM about a cofounder problem stay locked behind three independent systems. The patterns across six months of those notes still get to surface when you sit down on Sunday to think. Our own workflow needs both halves, and so does yours.

Privacy that costs you the product is just a coffin with a lock. We're building something you can actually use.

How Compass Keeps Your Notes Secure


Last Tuesday I wrote 4 notes during a single coffee.

One was a half-formed worry about runway. One was a question I wanted to ask another founder. The third was a 3-line product idea I'd been chewing on for weeks. The fourth was a story about a support ticket that made me feel like an idiot.

By Friday, all 4 had turned into different things.

The runway worry stayed in my private journal and probably always will. The founder question got dropped into a 5-person Telegram thread and pulled 6 replies in 20 minutes. The product idea became a tweet that did 80k impressions. The support story became this paragraph.

Same author, same week, 4 completely different audiences.

**Most notes apps can only handle one of those four.** They treat a note as one thing, with one home, written for one reader (usually you, later, when you've already forgotten about it).

Real founder notes don't behave like that. A note has a lifecycle, and the lifecycle has 4 layers.

## Layer 1: Private

This is the layer most apps actually optimize for, and the one most founders still drown in. Raw capture. Voice memos at 2am. Half-finished thoughts you don't want anyone to see, including future you.

The point of the private layer is permission.

You need a place where you can write "I think my cofounder is checked out" or "I have no idea what I'm doing this quarter" without performing for anyone. If your notes app makes you feel watched, you'll write a sanitized version of your actual thinking. The sanitized version is worth nothing.

Test for this layer: would you write the worst sentence about yourself in it? If no, your tool is wrong.

## Layer 2: Internal (AI Context)

Almost no tool builds for this layer. It's the one that matters most over the next 18 months.

When you write a note, you're also feeding a model. Not in a creepy training-data way. In a "this is my context window" way.

The notes you take this week are the difference between an AI that gives you generic startup advice and an AI that knows your runway is 9 months, your last 2 hires didn't work out, and your kid was born in February.

Most notes apps bolted AI on as a feature. A button that summarizes. A sidebar that suggests tags. The AI never actually reads anything you wrote last quarter, because the architecture treats your notes as documents instead of context.

Your notes are the corpus. Every AI tool you touch should be reading from the same well.

That's what Compass is built around. ## Layer 3: Community

Between "for me" and "for the internet" there's a layer most tools pretend doesn't exist. The small group. 5 founders in a Telegram thread. Your investor Slack. The 12 people who'll tell you the truth before you embarrass yourself in public.

Notes that go here are weird hybrids. They carry enough context to be useful (because the readers know you), and they're not polished.

**3. What am I avoiding?**

This is the question that separates useful weekly reviews from performative ones. Something is always being avoided.

### Step 4: Update your operating context (10 minutes)

Take what you learned and update the documents that drive your week-to-week execution:
