Choose the Work You're Built For

The first decision a founder makes is what to build, and it's the one founders get wrong.

Most pick a market because it's hot, because the money is there, because a competitor just raised. Then they spend years fighting their own nature.

Paul Graham's essay "How to Do Great Work" is blunt about the alternative. Great work sits where three things overlap: what you have natural aptitude for, what you're deeply interested in, and what has scope to matter. Pick work missing any one of those and you run uphill.

Investors have their own name for it. They call it founder-market fit. James Currier at NFX breaks it into four signs: obsession, founder story, personality, and experience. Obsession is the tell. He tells founders to skip a company unless they can't not do it, unless their brain is exploding with the idea.

Obsession shows up as knowledge. Currier is often surprised by competent founders who haven't gone deep on their market, on past attempts to build similar businesses, on who the competitors are. The founder who can't stop thinking about it also can't stop reading about it. The founder story is the same signal from the other side: a founder with a lived, specific reason for this market holds an edge a generalist can't fake. Personality and experience round it out. You're either wired for this kind of market, and you either have the operator background to move fast in it, or you're swimming upstream.

That sounds romantic. The data is colder. 80,000 Hours, the career-research group, has spent years on what they call personal fit: how well a role matches your specific skills and interests. Their finding is that people perform dramatically better in work that fits them. A founder in a market they're built for outworks, outsells, and outlasts a smarter founder in a market they drifted into.

The uncomfortable part is that you make this decision once and then live with it. You can change tactics. You can change product. Changing what you're fundamentally built for is harder.

So before you build anything, ask one question: is this the work I'd do for free, on my own time, because I can't stop thinking about it? If the answer is no, a hot market won't save you.

Pick the work you're built for. Then build it.
